Following a lectureship in  Philosophy at the  University of Fort Hare, Dr M J Lamola is a member of the Philosophical Society of Southern Africa (PPSA). His areas of expertise and research are  the contemporary review of  Marxist philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Ethics, and African Political Philosophy.

His career, which started  with an ordination as a Baptist minister at the age of  21,  has spanned a service as an executive  and thought leader in the ecumenical movement (South African Council of Churches and Institute of Contextual Theology), to that of a CEO at Denel Aviation.

He obtained his PhD at the University of Edinburgh while in exile with the African National Congress.

In 2009 he was elected the founding General Secretary of the National Interfaith Leaders Council (NILC) an institution for multi-religious dialogue and action started as the initiative of the President of the Republic of South Africa.

Dr Lamola's integrated intellectual background has positioned him since 2001 as a business executive in private equity investment ventures, and consultant to both private and public entities. During this period, as Principal Consultant at  Investment Management, he has established his reputation as an expert on corporate social investment and community empowerment investment schemes.

As an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University alumnus, his reading interest is in aviation public policy formulation, and transport economics.
